On Your Side: Wellbeing Must Always Come First

On Your Side: Wellbeing Must Always Come First

Football clubs can be powerful communities.

They give people routine, connection, friendship and somewhere they feel they belong. That also means teammates, coaches and volunteers may notice when somebody is struggling before anyone else does.

A new suicide-prevention toolkit created specifically for sport, called On Your Side, was launched this week. It helps clubs and individuals recognise concerns, begin difficult conversations and direct people towards appropriate support.

Its message strongly reflects what Solent Sports FC has always believed: results matter, but people matter more.

We want everyone connected with our club to feel able to speak honestly when life becomes difficult. You don’t need to be a counsellor or have all the answers. Sometimes the most important first step is noticing a change, checking in and listening without judgement.

We will be reviewing the toolkit and considering how its guidance can strengthen the support, training and procedures already surrounding our players and volunteers.

If something feels different, ask. If somebody speaks, listen. If professional help is needed, support them in finding it.

That is what being part of a team should mean.
