The message is simple: Football is for all.
We’re incredibly proud to share that Solent Sports FC were shortlisted and finished second in the Football v Homophobia Awards.
Awards were never the aim. We’re not in this to win silverware or chase recognition — we’re here to make a difference. Football just happens to be the vehicle we’ve chosen to do that with.
It was a real honour to be in a room with so many inspirational people and organisations who have helped change the footballing landscape over decades. The care, courage and commitment in that space was genuinely humbling.
And a bit of perspective feels important.
When frustrations rise about postponed games or small inconveniences, it’s worth remembering how far the game has come — and how fragile progress can be.
• Women were banned from playing FA-affiliated football for 50 years.
• Black players endured open, routine racist abuse well into the 70s and 80s.
• Being openly gay in football has only recently become safer — and still isn’t everywhere.
• And just last year, trans players were excluded from parts of the game they love.
Progress in football has never been easy or comfortable — but it has always mattered.
Yes, we want success on the pitch. But success off it matters just as much. Creating spaces where people feel safe, welcomed and valued will always come first.
Football must always be a game for all.
And we’ll keep doing our bit to make sure it is.
